A catchall designation for common organic compounds that is not always accurate in a chemical sense. Hydrocarbons often take the form of coal, oil or natural gas but most advanced cultures have long since abandoned their use as fossil fuels. Instead, they are frequently used for biochemical products and for plastics, an important basic construction material like metals and basic elements.
