The crab measures about 15 centimetres across the shell, almost 30cm across the leg span. Its claws are powerful enough to give a nasty nip but not to seriously harm a crewmember. The crabs use them to keep the snow snakes at bay but, more often than not, they end up as snake food. It's surprising - the crab flesh is rich in nutrient and delicious - wealth worth cracking a shell for.
